Independent schools are non-government and not-for-profit institutions operating within the community.
Most Independent Schools are governed independently and adhere to their chosen educational philosophy.
Independent schools include small and large day schools, boarding schools, co-educational, and single-sex schools.
Many Independent Schools provide a religious/ values based education or promote a particular education philosophy or interpretation of mainstream education.

Enrolements in the Northern Territory's Independent Sector continued to grow in 2008. There were 4865 students in twenty Independent Schools. This represented an increase of 4.7% over the 2007 enrolment and continued the pattern of sustained growth evidenced in previous years.
Applicants wishing to register a Non Government School must comply with the requirements of the Education Act, (Part VII - Non-Government Educational Institutions, Sections 61-68).
