Student Wellbeing and Special Education
The pastoral care of students is considered very important by the schools, which work hard to provide safe, healthy and caring school communities.
There are a variety of programs and policies in place that support the provision of these safe, healthy and caring learning environments and to ensure the well being of all students.
In line with the views of the World Health Organisation, a Health Promoting School Framework has been developed for Australia.
A Health Promoting School (HPS) is a school where a way of thinking and working is adopted by the whole school, in order to make it the best possible place to learn, work and play.
Health Promoting Schools NT assists Northern Territory Schools to apply the principles set out in the National Framework through Professional Learning opportunities and Policy development in the following areas:
· Health (Nutrition and Sexuality Education)
· Physical Activities
· Drug Education
· Physical Education Coordination Unit
· Health Promoting Schools Professional Learning Information
Special Education
The Student Services Branch provides consultative and collaborative support services to all Northern Territory children with special needs as well as their teachers and families.
Assistance is provided for students with disabilities, child protection needs and exceptional abilities.
A range of provision and support services is available in the Northern Territory for children with disabilities and additional learning needs.
The types of educational options available are:
· Inclusion in regular classrooms with consultative support
· Inclusion in regular classrooms with additional support
· Inclusion in regular classrooms with withdrawal support
· Special Educational facilities.
