Schooling Structure
In the Northern Territory it is compulsory for children from six to fifteen years of age to be enrolled in school or be receiving approved alternative education.
Some schools have flexible transition arrangements from Preschool to Transition. Under the current policy students may be accepted into Transition if they are turning five by 30th June of the year of enrolment.
Most Independent Primary and Secondary schools conduct classes from 8 am to 2.30 pm from Monday to Friday, although some may start and finish later.
Extra-curricular activities, rehearsals, excursions and sports activities often occur outside normal school hours in independent schools. Preschools usually offer morning or afternoon sessions.

Preschool
Preschool is recommended although not compulsory. Children can start preschool as soon as they turn four years of age and most preschools accept enrolments at the beginning of each term.
Transition
At age five, children enter Transition, the first stage of their primary schooling. This stage provides the students with an environment and program to assist them in adapting to the school-learning environment.
Primary
Primary school extends from Transition to Year 7.
Middle
After Year 7 students move into Middle school to complete Years 8 to 10. Students are legally required to attend school until they are fifteen years of age and that usually equates to Year 10. There are a number of independent schools that are now grouping students in the upper primary to lower secondary area in Middle Schools, to ease the transition from primary to secondary education.
Secondary
Students who continue on to Year 12 can complete the Northern Territory Certificate of Education, the highest secondary level. Kormilda College also offers the International
